Meet our first LGBT Emerging Fashion Designer ‘Fierce FashionByRL’ Representing American Samoa; Berta Laumoli.
Growing up in the village of Vailoatai, American Samoa, Berta was instilled with the love of all that surrounded her; nature, people and the beautiful culture of Samoa.
From this, her love of fashion and art flourished. A proud faafafine Samoa, I am a member of the SOFIAS (Sosaiete O Faafafine I Amerika Samoa), a group that embraces gender equality in our island and around the Pacific. She is considered to be a transgender woman and an activist for LGBTQI. ‘‘I hope to invite people to see beyond the physical appearance and to see how faafafine can be a positive change in the world through fashion and talent.’’
By profession, she is a school teacher and loves working with her students. When it comes to their interests, talents and abilities, her students motivate and inspire her to look beyond the four corners of the classroom, and create works that tell the story of who they are. Sketching and drawing has been a childhood pastime of Berta’s and have come across some inspiring individuals who have encouraged her to love this art and so much more.
